Public Transport, The Pros and Cons
At present, in many countries, it is
common to see people travelling by public transport. Despite the surge of
transportation start-ups recently, which have been benefited from IT
development, people still prefer to use public transport, especially for a long
trip. However, there are concerns about whether it benefits the society or the
drawbacks outweigh the positives. I will look at both sides and try to draw a
conclusion.
Let’s start by looking at the main
disadvantage of public transport. For many, it is far less flexible than
private transportation, for example cars. If we want to travel by bus, we will
have to suit its schedule. Nonetheless, we can drive cars whenever we want.
Secondly, generally speaking, public
transports are less secure and less private. A lot of crime scenes occur daily
in public transport, whether buses, trains or even planes. Some even involves in
sexual seduction and raping. Another issue is that for girls in public transport
they may not be able to talk about the newest gossip, unless the people
overhear the conversation, which means public transports are less private.
Turning to the other side of the
argument, as regards public transports, it helps to reduce traffic jam on
street. One big car certainly will not carry as many passengers as a city bus.
Moreover, sometime a car only carries its driver in a big space which is not
very efficient.
Another major advantage is that
using public transport, has been well-known, reduces CO2 emission which is the
major cause of global warming. Energy needed per person to transport men in a
bus is not as much as a man in a motorcycle.
Having looked both sides, public
transports are less secure and private. However, it helps preventing global
warming and traffic jam. In my view, for the sake of sustainability, people
should start to use public transport.
